Identity Theft Prevention For Online Shoppers
Michalis 'BIG Mike' Kotzakolios

Identity theft prevention is very important for those who shop often on the internet. If you personally make a lot of purchases online using a credit card, you can protect yourself significantly by not purchasing from any site that is not secure.

Many web sites now advertise protection for those who shop. Even so, posting credit card information is risky, even though most people pay with credit cards on the Internet. It is a big problem for consumers and web site merchants alike. And it is a growing problem as well. Even though there have been technological advances to help prevent fraud, this type of crime is still very common, which is why it is so crucial for you to take identity theft prevention measures.

There are several preventative measures one can take to ward off online predators. The first is not to give out driver’s license or social security card numbers out online. If someone is asking for this information, it is best to ignore them. When chatting online, don’t trust people completely. Many scams have been reported where people agree to cash checks and money orders for people living overseas. These checks are not real. Not only will money be lost, but fines for bouncing checks will be charged to one’s checking account. Anyone living overseas and is working for a nonprofit agency or the government has access to a bank account or online banking system set up just for their use. This is a common form of identity theft.

Another way of obtaining information is by sending fake e-mails to people claiming to need information about existing accounts. Never respond even if they appear real; this is another important part of identity theft prevention.

Credit card companies do not send inquiries concerning this information unless the person themselves has requested it. Even so, most companies will require the person to call about their account and do not recommend using the internet for communication purposes. People have lost thousands of dollars to these types of identity theft scams. Identity theft prevention begins by being aware of this growing problem, always being suspicious of e-mails from so-called banks and creditors, and never sharing personal information with people who are not close friends.
